Why acrylic fabric?
Because Sunbrella fabrics are designed for durability, stain resistance and easy maintenance and many years of use Outdoor Cushions uses only the finest Sunbrella solution-dyed acrylic fabrics. Solution-dying is the process of adding color dye to acrylic fibers during the manufacturing process while they are still in a liquid state. This method of solution-dying acrylic fabrics is the key to locking in the vibrant colors for a long lasting, fade resistant fabric. For this reason, acrylic fabrics offer incredible resistance to stains, wear and tear in any application.

Are Sunbrella fabrics waterproof?
No, Sunbrella fabrics are not waterproof but rather water repellent. During the finishing process a water repellent coating is applied to the fabric surface. Normal wear and usage will reduce the effectiveness of this coating just as cleaning the fabric will. We suggest that after Sunbrella fabrics are cleaned and water repellency is a factor, We recommend that you re-treat your Sunbrella fabrics with a water repellent treatment such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard™ which can be purchased at local awning, marine or patio furniture shops.

Will mildew grow on Sunbrella fabrics?
If Sunbrella fabrics are kept clean they will not mildew. One of the characteristic of acrylic fiber is that it will not support the growth of mildew, as a natural fiber such as cotton will. Mildew will and can grow on any surface that is dirty, so keeping your Sunbrella fabric clean will help you avoid any mildewing from growing. If mildew begins to become a problem with your cushions or umbrella please review our care and cleaning instructions.

Can Sunbrella fabrics be hosed down?
One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabrics looking good and to delay the need for deep or vigorous cleaning is to hose fabrics off on a monthly basis with clear water. This practice will help prevent dirt from becoming deeply imbedded in the fabric and eliminate the need for more frequent vigorous cleanings. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years. Remember after hosing down the fabric to allow the fabric to air dry.

Do Sunbrella fabrics dry quickly?
Sunbrella fabrics are woven and therefore they are also highly breathable. This is the reason they dry so quickly with simple air exposure. An important note about Sunbrella fabrics, they are treated with a flurocarbon coating, which greatly enhances water repellency. This coating requires replenishment after every vigorous cleaning.

How often do my cushions need to be thoroughly cleaned?
In most situations, a thorough cleaning will be required every two to three years. However storing your cushions or patio umbrella indoors and keeping them clean will greatly reduce the frequency needed for thorough cleanings.

What is "Mild" or "Natural" soap as mentioned in the "Cleaning Instructions"?
By "Natural Soap" we mean a basic hand soap such as Woolite and Ivory Snow. These soaps are gentle and rinse out easily without diminishing the water-repellent coating applied to the fabric surface.
Regular laundry detergent will not harm the fabric, however the water-repellent coating will be removed easier. Make sure to use cold water or lukewarm water and to air dry the fabric. After several cleanings you will need to re-treat the fabric with a water repellent coating, such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard.

Do Sunbrella fabrics have UV protection?
Sunbrella fabrics have been tested and rated at up to 98% UV protection from the harmful effects of the sun. Whites and lighter color Sunbrella fabrics provide less UV protection than darker color Sunbrella fabrics. This protection factor is inherent to the Sunbrella fabric and will not be reduced by exposure to the sun or usage of the fabric.
